I never heard anyone talk about Hoag’s Pond the entire five years I’ve resided in Bellingham, then in one week, two people mentioned the pond to me. So I laced up my Keens and headed out to the pond.
It wasn’t easy to get to, even though it probably should have been. I landed on Old Fairhaven Parkway and 24th Street (or is it Avenue?) and then walked on the Interurban trail. I didn’t really know where I was going, so I stopped a woman on the trail. She gave me serpentine directions to the pond, but I eventually found it, tucked away in a forgotten corner. Oddly, even though people mentioned the pond to me, I had the place to myself, sans one hiker who strolled past me, waved and went on his way.
As I hiked into the small pond, a flock of ducks flew past in a dramatic fashion and then landed on the far side of the pond, near lily pads. I tried to make a video of them, but my camera wouldn’t cooperate so the end result was blurry. I eventually, took photos of the ducks when they sneaked over to my side of the pond. I hope they weren’t expecting bread since I never poison ducks with bread. Plus the pond supplies them with their daily nutrition.
