When I first moved to Bellingham, I despised the Cordata Neighborhood. It’s not the usual Bellingham neighborhood with quaint Victorian and Craftsman houses. There are no tree-lined streets, lush gardens, or even a feeling of community. You’ll find plenty of hotels, motels, strip malls, busy streets, and huge apartment complexes.
However, over the years I’ve trained my eyes to see the beauty in Cordata which includes rows of colorful trees in the fall, wild flowers growing in meadows or marshland in the spring and early summer, the attractive campus of Whatcom Community College, the Community Food Coop, and the arty bus Cordata bus station. For people traveling by public transport the bus station provides the hub for inter-town bus service (Lynden, Blaine, Birch Bay and Ferndale) as well as, a departure point for the BOLT buses to Vancouver and Seattle.
