Intuitive Coaching 101–10 Best Self-Help Books for Artists

160px-Leonardesco,_forse_ambrogio_de_predis,_angelo_di_sx_della_vergine_delle_rocce_di_londraActually the challenge is to come up with ten self-help or creative restoration books for artists.  The first book that always comes to mind is Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, which has gone through many editions and it’s not the only book in her arsenal.  I’ve read other titles by Cameron and felt inspired to write or explore other creative avenues after reading these books.  The artist’s dates, artist’s walks and the morning pages have fueled my creative efforts over the years.  The Artist’s Way works for any creative endeavor too, so don’t think you need to be a painter or an actor to use it.

A similar book is Dan Wakefield (another Hollywood screenwriter and novelist), Releasing the Creative Spirit.  This book also has exercises to unleash inspiration and creativity, but it’s not represented by a 12 week program like the Artist’s Way.  It’s part memoir, part exercises, and part tribute to the creative process by giving examples of a myriad of creative folks ranging from medical doctors to writers.

If you want to get even more spiritual check out titles by Hay House authors such as Sandra Anne Taylor’s Quantum Success, Truth, Transformation and Triumph or Sonia Choquette’s Ask Your Guides or the 9-week program, Creating Your Heart’s Desire.  Remember that manifesting a better life counts as creative efforts.

For writers, I recommend Brenda Ueland So You Want to Write and Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones (both favorite among veteran writers).  These books will unblock you so you can get some words onto the blank page.

I also recommend two books that delve into myths, stories and legends which include Joseph Campbell’s The Power of Myth (interviewed by Bill Moyer, a journalist-storyteller) and Clarissa Pinkola Estes’ Women Who Run with Wolves.

1. The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron

2. Releasing the Creative Spirit, Dan Wakefield

3. So You Want to Write, Brenda Ueland

4. Writing Down the Bones, Natalie Goldberg

5. Ask Your Guides, Sonia Choquette

6. Creating Your Heart’s Desire, Sonia Choquette

7. Truth, Transformation and Triumph, Sandra Anne Taylor

8. Quantum Success, Sandra Anne Taylor

9. The Power of Myth, Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyer

10. Women Who Run with Wolves, Clarissa Pinkola Estes
